Crafted Encounters: Japanese Water-Based Woodblock Printing (Mokuhanga)

€‎30

Join us on Thursday, September 24th at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks from 5:30PM - 7:30PM to learn Mokuhanga as part of the Dublin By Dusk initiative.

Following in the tradition of Japanese Ukiyo-e printmaking -Mokuhanga (木版画) is the traditional Japanese art of water-based woodblock printing. Literally translating to "wood" (moku) and "print" (hanga), it is a non-toxic relief printing technique using water-based inks, brushes, and rice starch paste applied to handmade washi paper, all hand-printed without a press - only a hand-held baren. It is ideal printing process for anyone interested in an environmentally friendly and meditative approach to printmaking.

This 2 hour workshop will cover (max 10 participants):

  • The traditional Japanese kento registration system
  • Introduction to Japanese Mokuhanga prints
  • Introduction to Japanese brushes and their uses
  • Carving techniques
  • Preparing a block to create a print
  • Traditional methods for laying paper
  • Printing techniques, including an introduction to bokashi (gradation)
  • Participants will be guided through printing a block using water colour and nori (rice paste), creating a print to take home from a block carved by Ann.

This workshop was directly inspired by 'A Dubliner’s Collection of Asian Art: The Albert Bender Exhibition' at the National Museum of Ireland ,Collins Barracks. Irish American Albert Bender gifted his collection of Asian Art to the Museum in the 1930s and is available to be viewed in room 13A at Collins Barracks.

Beginning 28th of May, we are opened until 20:00 on the last Thursday of every month, as part of "Dublin by Dusk", at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks and Kildare Street. Feel free to drop in before the event and explore our open galleries.
